In this blog we will explain the fundamentals of why popular\u00a0calendar &amp; reminder apps like\u00a0Apple iCal, Apple Reminders, Google Calendar, may not work.<\/p>\n<p>The<b>\u00a0main flaw with all these apps<\/b>\u00a0is they were\u00a0<b>made by people with healthy brains<\/b>,\u00a0<b>for people with healthy brains,<\/b>\u00a0which means they were not built with you in mind \u2013 they don\u2019t understand what it\u2019s like to live with executive dysfunction, memory or cognitive impairments. \u00a0To be fair, how can they? You can only truly understand it when you live with it. These apps, although sufficient enough for the average user, lacks the fundamental ability to get us\u00a0to<b>\u00a0start something, follow-through with it<\/b>, and<b>\u00a0not forget\u00a0<\/b>along the way.<\/p>\n<h2>Usability is\u00a0EVERYTHING<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First, lets understand what \u201cUsability\u201d means:\u00a0<b>Usability means that the\u00a0people who use a\u00a0product\u00a0can do so\u00a0quickly and easily\u00a0to accomplish\u00a0their own tasks<\/b>.<span style=\"font-size: .8em;\">\u2013 Janice (Ginny) Redish and Joseph Dumas,\u00a0A Practical Guide to Usability Testing, 1999, p. 4 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Usability\u00a0<\/b>is the difference between a user adopting a product\u00a0<b>vs.<\/b>\u00a0abandoning a product. \u00a0If a product does not help a user accomplish their own task, then it has failed. \u00a0\u00a0This concept is especially true when it comes to our population of users. \u00a0People living with Brain Injuries, ADHD, Alzheimers, Dementia, etc., have a\u00a0<b>real need<\/b>\u00a0for products that assist in their day-to-day living, especially when it comes to managing it and getting things done.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at an example. Lets look at a daily task like taking medication.\u00a0As you can imagine, this could become quite\u00a0challenging for our users. \u00a0Here\u2019s a simple example of what\u00a0happens to Johnny when he tries to manage his medication\u00a0using an app that wasn\u2019t built for him:<\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-355\" src=\"http:\/\/qcard.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/bell-32x32.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/>\u00a08:00AM<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 Johnny receives an\u00a0alert\u00a0on his Smartphone\u00a0reminding him to take his medication. Johnny has 2 options to choose from:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>OPTION 1:<\/b>\u00a0<b>stop what he\u2019s\u00a0doing and take\u00a0immediate\u00a0action<\/b>.\u00a0 Healthcare professionals often offer this as a strategy to help us get things done.\u00a0 I understand the theory behind it and how it makes logical sense on paper. \u00a0But when applied to\u00a0real life, this theory is\u00a0<b>full of flaws<\/b>. \u00a0First, it\u2019s impossible to predict and deliver\u00a0alerts for events at the exact moment they are needed. \u00a0Secondly, asking us to stop what we\u2019re doing and move onto another task is adding to our chaos.\u00a0 Option 1 actually\u00a0<b>fights\u00a0against us.<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Now you\u2019re introducing a new tool that\u00a0will distract us even more and continuously take us off task. It\u2019s\u00a0not practical and is not a solution we can rely on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>OPTION 2:<\/b>\u00a0<b>Johnny relies on himself\u00a0to remember later<\/b>. \u00a0Well\u2026 we can all guess what happens next\u2026\u00a0The scary thing is, sometimes it only takes a few minutes to forget all about it. \u00a0This option is NOT recommended.
